Prakriti vs Vikriti: Your Dosha vs Your Imbalance
October 17, 2026

You took a dosha quiz and got "Pitta." Then you read that you might be "Vata-imbalanced" right now. Which is it?
Both can be true. Ayurveda separates who you are by nature (Prakriti) from how you are right now (Vikriti). Understanding the difference is one of the most useful things you can learn, because it tells you whether to maintain your natural pattern or correct a recent drift.
This guide explains both terms, how they differ, how to tell which one you're feeling, and what to do about each. (New to the doshas? Start with our beginner's guide to Vata, Pitta and Kapha.)

Quick Answer
- Prakriti (say "PRAH-kri-tee") is your constitution: the mix of Vata, Pitta and Kapha you were born with. It stays the same through life.
- Vikriti (say "vih-KRI-tee") is your current state: the mix you have now, shaped by stress, food, season, age and lifestyle. It changes.
- The goal in Ayurveda is to keep your Vikriti close to your Prakriti, so you feel like yourself.
What Is Prakriti?
Prakriti means "nature" or "original form." In Ayurveda, it describes your innate constitution: the proportion of the three doshas set at conception. It shapes your:
- Body build and frame
- Digestion and appetite patterns
- Energy and sleep style
- Temperament and how you respond to stress
- What foods, climates and routines tend to suit you
Think of it as your factory settings. Someone with a Pitta-dominant Prakriti is naturally warm, driven and sharp. Someone with a Vata-dominant Prakriti is naturally light, quick and creative. Someone with a Kapha-dominant Prakriti is naturally steady, sturdy and calm.
Most people have one or two dominant doshas. See dual-dosha types if you're a blend.
What Is Vikriti?
Vikriti means "that which has changed" or "deviation." It describes how the doshas are right now, compared with your natural pattern.
Vikriti shifts with:
- Stress and emotions: a deadline, grief or burnout
- Diet: too much cold or raw food, spice, heavy or fried food
- Sleep and routine: late nights, irregular meals, travel
- Season and weather: cold and dry, hot, or damp
- Age and life stage
- Illness and recovery
Think of it as your current weather, not your climate. A Pitta person who has had a few sleepless, hectic weeks may feel anxious, dry and cold, which looks a lot like Vata. That is Vikriti.
Prakriti vs Vikriti: Side by Side
| Prakriti | Vikriti | |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Your birth constitution | Your current state |
| Changes over time? | No (lifelong) | Yes (days, weeks, seasons) |
| Shaped by | Genetics and conception | Stress, diet, sleep, season, age |
| Feels like | "This is just how I am" | "I haven't felt like myself lately" |
| Ayurvedic goal | Know it and maintain it | Spot it and bring it back toward Prakriti |
| Example | A naturally sharp, warm Pitta type | The same person feeling cold, anxious and dry after months of stress |
| Question to ask | "What am I like when I'm well?" | "What's different lately?" |
A Worked Example
Maya is a Pitta-dominant type. Normally she is focused and confident, runs warm and has a strong appetite.
After a stressful two months with irregular meals and poor sleep, she feels:
- Anxious and scattered
- Cold and dry-skinned
- Gassy and bloated, with an irregular appetite
Those are classic Vata signs. Maya's Prakriti is still Pitta, but her Vikriti has swung toward Vata. The advice that helps her is Vata-calming (warm cooked meals, regular times, early bedtime), while her natural Pitta tendencies tell her to avoid overdoing spice and to take real breaks.
This is why Ayurveda doesn't say, "You're a Pitta, so eat this forever." It asks: "What's your baseline, and what's shifted?"
How to Tell Which Is Which
Use this simple self-check.
Step 1: Think back, not just today. Ask: how have I been most of my life? Consider build, digestion, sleep, temperament and how I react to stress. These patterns point to Prakriti.
Step 2: Compare with the last few weeks. Ask: what's different lately? Appetite, sleep, mood, skin, digestion, energy. Changes point to Vikriti.
Step 3: Spot the pattern.
- If your recent symptoms match your usual type, it may be a Prakriti dosha getting out of balance (for example, a Pitta person with more heat and irritability).
- If your recent symptoms match a different dosha, your Vikriti has drifted away from your Prakriti.
Step 4: Check the cause. A change in season, workload, diet or routine is usually the trigger.
A quiz mostly captures Prakriti if it asks about lifelong traits, and Vikriti if it asks about the last few weeks. Many online quizzes mix both, which is why results can feel inconsistent. Treat any quiz as a starting point.
How to Care for Your Prakriti
Your Prakriti tells you what tends to keep you well:
- Vata: warmth, routine, grounding foods. See the Vata guide.
- Pitta: cooling, moderation, regular meals. See the Pitta guide.
- Kapha: lightness, movement, stimulation. See the Kapha guide.
Use these as your default habits, adjusted gently for the season.
How to Work With Your Vikriti
When you feel off, ask which dosha is elevated and choose habits that calm that dosha, not necessarily your Prakriti.
| If you've been feeling… | Likely elevated | Try |
|---|---|---|
| Anxious, scattered, dry, cold, sleepless | Vata | Warm cooked meals, regular schedule, oil massage, earlier bed |
| Irritable, overheated, burned out, acidic | Pitta | Cooling fresh foods, real breaks, no skipped meals, moderate exercise |
| Heavy, sluggish, congested, unmotivated | Kapha | Lighter spiced meals, morning movement, variety, no daytime naps |
Small, steady changes usually work best. If you're unsure, or the signs are strong, see a qualified practitioner or your doctor.
Seasons and Vikriti
Because the seasons raise particular doshas, your Vikriti often follows them:
- Autumn and early winter: Vata tends to rise
- Late winter and spring: Kapha tends to rise
- Summer: Pitta tends to rise
That's the idea behind Ayurvedic seasonal living (Ritucharya). A routine that keeps you steady across the year is also covered in our daily routine guide.
What Does Science Say?
The Prakriti and Vikriti framework is traditional. Some research explores whether "Prakriti" types correlate with measurable traits, but the evidence is early and mixed, and no test is widely accepted in mainstream medicine. A dosha result is best used as a self-reflection tool, not a diagnosis. Notice what suits you and keep what helps.
Common Misconceptions
- "My dosha changes." Your Prakriti doesn't. Your Vikriti does.
- "If I feel Vata, I must be a Vata type." Not necessarily; it may be temporary.
- "Balance means eliminating a dosha." No. You need all three; the aim is your healthy balance.
- "A quiz tells me everything." It gives a rough picture, not an assessment.
- "Prakriti means I can't change." It describes tendencies, not destiny.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Prakriti and Vikriti? Prakriti is your lifelong constitution; Vikriti is your current state, which shifts with stress, diet, season and lifestyle.
Can your Prakriti change? In Ayurvedic theory, no. It is set at conception. What changes is your Vikriti.
How do I find my Prakriti? Reflect on your lifelong traits (build, digestion, sleep, temperament), take a dosha quiz, or consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.
How do I know my Vikriti? Notice what has changed in the last few weeks (digestion, sleep, mood, skin, energy) and which dosha those signs match.
Which should I follow, Prakriti or Vikriti? Use your Prakriti as your default baseline, and adjust for your Vikriti when you feel out of balance.
Can the quiz tell me my Vikriti? Only if it asks about recent symptoms. Many mix lifelong and current traits, so treat results cautiously.
Is it normal for my result to change when I retake the quiz? Yes. If a quiz mixes recent feelings with lifelong traits, your answers (and result) can shift with the season or your stress level.
Is this medical advice? No. Ayurveda is a traditional framework. Consult a healthcare professional for health concerns.
